Steps to Follow for Applying the Duram Urethane Wood Varnish
Preparation:
- Clean the surface thoroughly—remove dirt, grease, algae, and other contaminants.
- Ensure wood moisture content is below 14%.
- Repair any imperfections using appropriate filler or knotting sealer.
- For bare wood: Sand with 80 or 100-grit paper, wipe with a damp cloth, and allow to dry.
- For previously varnished wood: Sand to a matte finish, remove dust, and test compatibility.
- With flaking surfaces: Strip old varnish using Duram EcoStripp or DuraStripp, then sand evenly.
How to Apply the Duram Urethane Wood Varnish:
- Stir thoroughly for 5 minutes using a flat paddle.
- Apply in a clean, dust-free environment between 5°C and 35°C.
- Use a natural bristle brush, foam roller, or air-assisted spray.
- Apply 2 or more coats in the direction of the wood grain.
- Use long, smooth strokes; sand lightly between coats if fibres appear.
- Ensure all exposed areas, joints, and end grains are coated.
Cleanup:
- Wipe tools with Mineral Turpentine
- Dispose of waste according to local regulations
- Store remaining varnish in a sealed container
- Clean hands and skin with soap and water
