Steps to Follow For Using the Carbon Steel Metric Vernier

Preparation:

1. Clean Workpiece: Ensure the object you are measuring is clean and free from dust, debris, oil, or burrs on its edges. Burrs can lead to inaccurate readings and damage the calliper.
2. Clean Calliper: Wipe the measuring surfaces of the vernier calliper with a clean, lint-free cloth.
3. Check Zero Point: Close the jaws completely and ensure the “0” mark on the main scale aligns perfectly with the “0” mark on the vernier scale. If not, inspect for damage or wear.

Taking Measurements:

For External Measurements:

1. Open Jaws: Open the main jaws of the calliper wider than the object.
2. Position Object: Place the object firmly between the main jaws.
3. Close Jaws: Gently close the jaws until they make firm but not excessive contact with the object. Use the micro-adjustment wheel for fine closure.
4. Lock Jaw: Tighten the jaw lock screw to secure the measurement.
5. Read Measurement:
   • Main Scale: Read the whole millimetre (or inch) mark on the main scale just before the “0” mark on the vernier scale.
   • Vernier Scale: Find the mark on the vernier scale that perfectly aligns with any mark on the main scale. This aligned mark indicates the decimal value (e.g., if it’s the 10th mark and accuracy is 0.02mm, it’s 0.20mm).
   • Total: Add the main scale reading to the vernier scale reading.

For Internal Measurements:

1. Insert Jaws: Insert the smaller, upper jaws into the opening you wish to measure.
2. Open Jaws: Open the jaws until they make firm but not excessive contact with the internal surfaces.
3. Lock Jaw: Tighten the jaw lock screw.
4. Read Measurement: Read the dimension from the scales as described for external measurements.

For Depth Measurements (using the depth rod):

1. Place Base: Place the flat end of the main beam (the bottom of the fixed jaw) firmly on the top surface of the object.
2. Extend Depth Rod: Extend the depth measuring rod (located at the end of the sliding jaw) into the hole or recess until it touches the bottom.
3. Lock Jaw: Tighten the jaw lock screw.
4. Read Measurement: Read the depth from the scales.

For Step Measurements (using the step face):

1. Position Step Face: Place the step measuring face (the end face of the main beam) on the higher surface of the step.
2. Extend Jaw: Extend the sliding jaw until its end face touches the lower surface of the step.
3. Lock Jaw: Tighten the jaw lock screw.
4. Read Measurement: Read the step height from the scales.

After Use & Storage:

1. Clean: Wipe the calliper clean, especially the measuring surfaces, to remove any dirt, oil, or fingerprints. Lightly apply a rust-preventative oil if storing for long periods, as carbon steel is prone to rust.
2. Store Safely: Store the vernier in its protective case (if included) in a clean, dry, and cool place. Avoid dropping it or subjecting it to impacts.
